Transfiguration of the Lord Parish, Poblacion, Cavinti

For Members of ecclesial movements and new communities

The history of the parish began as the image of El Salvador del Mundo (The Savior of the World) was discovered in a binayoyo tree by Antonio, Gabriel, and Dionisio Pahuwan. On March 7, 1606, the parish priest of Lumbang started the construction of a chapel on the site where the image was found. In 1619, a papal bull separated Cavinti from the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of Lumbang and had Fr. Alonzo de Ampudia as its first parish priest. El Salvador del Mundo became its patron and the feast day was celebrated every August 6, Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

In 1621, the church and convent were built. However, in 1639 it was severely damaged due to the Chinese uprising. From 1820 to 1831, a bell tower was constructed and in 1844, a school was established. The construction of the parish church was finished in 1854. Between the years 1885 and 1895, snowfall was experienced in Cavinti and an image of the Virgin Mary carrying the Child Jesus was found in the sacristy. Due to this incident, Nuestra Señora delas Nieves (Our Lady of the Snows) was declared as secondary patroness. Her feast day is celebrated every August 5. The parish church experienced heavy damage due to earthquakes. Repairs and reconstructions started in 1953 and were finished in 1960.
