San Gregorio Magno Parish, Poblacion, Majayjay

For Choirs, Marching bands and musicians

The town of Majayjay, Laguna, has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1576, after successful negotiations between the Spanish conquistador Juan de Salcedo and local tribes. The town became a strategic stopover for caravans traveling between Manila and the Bicol region, with its large church and old parish convent, now home to a Catholic school, serving as rest points for travelers. Majayjay’s pleasant upland climate also made it a place of respite for sick Franciscan missionaries, further emphasizing the need for large church facilities. The church building itself has undergone several reconstructions, including three previous structures that were destroyed by fire, with the current stone church and convent being built between 1616 and 1649.

The Majayjay Church has faced numerous challenges throughout its history, including fires, typhoons, and even use as quarters by American troops during the Filipino-American War. Despite these hardships, the church has been continuously repaired and strengthened over the centuries. In the early 20th century, it was restored again in 1912. Today, Majayjay Church stands as the largest parish church in Laguna, a significant historical and architectural icon that preserves the legacy of the Spanish colonial era. Recognized for its cultural importance, the church was declared a National Historical Treasure by the National Museum.
