The much-anticipated solemn declaration of San Gregorio Magno Parish Church as a Minor Basilica is scheduled for May 3 of this year, according to Rev. Fr. Melchor Barcenas, Parish Priest. With preparations well underway, both physical and spiritual, this event promises to be a momentous occasion for the faithful of the parish and of the diocese.
Preparations for this grand celebration are now in full swing. In addition to cleaning and preparing the church, physical preparations are underway, including the ongoing construction of additional comfort rooms to accommodate the expected influx of visitors. Efforts are being made to ensure the Basilica is ready to welcome both the faithful and dignitaries.
In keeping with tradition, the Basilica will be adorned with papal symbols, including the Umbrellino (papal umbrella), Tintinnabulum (papal bell), and flags crafted by Vitre Artus, a well-known ecclesiastical designer in Laguna. These symbols will be strategically placed both inside and outside the building, symbolizing the connection between the local church and the Vatican, as a basilica is coined as the 'church of the pope.'
As the solemn declaration is an important event in the spiritual life of the people of God, the faithful are encouraged to join in prayers as a spiritual preparation for the event. A special Novena has been prepared, with the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament taking place daily at the church.
Meetings have also been held with local civil authorities to ensure a collaboration between church and the government. This collaboration aims to make the celebration a truly harmonious and organized occasion for everyone involved. In addition, since the Apostolic Nuncio is Dean of the Diplomatic Corps in the Philippines, it is necessary that the local government accord him with proper reception.
To accommodate the expected crowd, designated parking areas will be set up for the faithful. Special car passes will be issued to ensure easy access to these areas. Logistics and arrangements are being carefully managed to ensure that all attendees can participate in the celebration with ease.
Young people from the community are being actively mobilized to serve as volunteers for the celebration. This will not only allow them to contribute to this important event but also deepen their engagement with their faith and the local church community.
Invitations to bishops were sent several months ago, and the organizers are now awaiting confirmation of their attendance, with some already confirming attendance. Invitations to other shrines and basilicas in the Philippines were also sent. Additionally, invitations to the general public will be sent during the first week of April.
With physical, spiritual, and material preparations in full swing, the entire community is working together to ensure the solemn declaration of Majayjay Basilica is a success. It promises to be an event of faith, unity, and joy that will resonate for years to come.
As May 3 approaches, the excitement and anticipation for the solemn declaration of Majayjay Basilica continue to build. With careful preparations underway, the event will be a testament to faith, especially as the Catholic Church now celebrates the Jubilee Year.
