“LET US WORK TOGETHER,” BISHOP TELLS LAWMAKERS

“If we want to…we need to….work together so that the trust in you [of] the people, would go back” This was Bishop Marcelino Antonio Maralit Jr’s homily in a Mass celebrated at the House of Representatives today, February 25, 2026. The Mass, which was concelebrated by selected priests from the diocese and sponsored by the Speaker and the Representatives from Laguna, was part of the spiritual and values enhancement program of the Lower House.

The Diocese of San Pablo comprises the entire province of Laguna, which is composed of four legislative districts and three lone districts, most of whose Representatives are Catholics. Rep. Ann Matibag, for example, is a devotee of “Lolo Uweng,” the miraculous image of the dead Christ in Landayan, San Pedro City. Rep. Roy Gonzales of Santa Rosa, moreover, is a former diocesan seminarian.

In his homily, Bishop Maralit reflected on the Gospel of the day’s message about signs. As in the Gospel, no sign is no longer needed in a country faced with problems because there are already a lot of signs around that calls for action. What needs to be done is to read the signs of the times, interpret them according to the needs of the people, and make decisions that lead to concrete actions.

The Mass also coincided with the 40th Anniversary of EDSA People Power Revolution. The bishop himself, in a Pastoral Letter published on Sunday, emphasized the importance of EDSA I not only as a nation but also as people of faith. “May we continue forming consciences, defending truth, promoting the common good, and becoming instruments of reconciliation in our communities,” he penned as he encouraged the faithful to remember EDSA People Power with faith and conviction.
